Best NBA nickname? Ex-forward Eddie Johnson reveals his best

eddie-johnson-coolMany NBA players have always had great, memorable nicknames. Before “King James”, there were “The Answer”, “The Glove” and so many others.

Former NBA player Eddie Johnson believes there are some nicknames of former long-retired NBA stars that are even more popular than many nicknames of today’s NBA players.

Johnson named those, along with his favorite ones recently, according to USA Today Sports.

Among those named by Johnson were: Earvin “Magic” Johnson, Michael “Air” Jordan, “The Mailman” Karl Malone, Hakeem “The Dream” Olajuwon, “The Human Highlight Film” Dominique Wilkins.

Johnson’s favorite are “The Iceman” George Gervin and “Pistol” Pete Maravich. And yet his “all time best” was none other than “DR J” Julius Erving.

“When the announcer for the Philadelphia 76ers Dave Zinkoff before the starting line-up would say: ‘From the University of Massachusetts, #6, captain of the Philadephia 76ers, Julius the doctor Erving…’ – that used to give me chills when I heard that nickname,” Johnson recalled.

Johnson, who own the 6th Man of the Year award in 1988-98, played for Kansas City Kings (Sacramento Kings), Phoenix Suns, Seattle Supersonics, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers and Houston Rockets during his NBA career.

He played a total of 1199 NBA games (started 479), scoring over 19,000 points and nearly 5000 rebounds. Johnson averaged double figures in 12 of his 17 seasons, reaching carer high 22.9 ppg in 1984-85. Johnson holds career averages of 16 ppg, 4 rpg in 27.2 mpg.
