Chris Webber among people willing to buy Atlanta Hawks

chris-webber-last-seasonFormer NBA All-Star Chris Webber reportedly is among those who have interest in purchasing shares of NBA’s Atlanta Hawks team.

Yahoo Sports reported last week that Webber is among a potential ownership group that is interested in the Hawks.

Webber himself tweeted that The Webber Group’s intentions to “acquire the majority interest” of the Hawks and keep the team in Atlanta.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports said that Webber would have a modest financial investment in the partnership, but is expected to emerge as a face of the bid with an ultimate goal of becoming a prominent figure on the basketball side for the Hawks.

According to Yahoo’s sources, the primary investors in the deal are expected to become public in the near future.

Wojnarowski did not name any other members of Webber’s group, nor did he indicate the seriousness of negotiations at this stage.

Webber, who made $178 million in NBA salary, would likely be a minority owner in any purchasing agreement.

As reported earlier, the Hawks’ owner Bruce Levenson is selling his shares of the team, after purchasing the team in 2004. Levenson is selling his share after his racially charged email from 2012 surfaced and became public.

Currently, it is unknown if Webber and his group want to purchase Levenson’s share or the whole team altogether. Forbes valued the Hawks franchise at $425 million in January 2014, though its numbers have been consistently under the final sale price.

Chris Webber played for Golden State Warriors, Washington Bullets (Wizards), Sacramento Kings, Philadephia 76sers and Detroit Pistons during his NBA career.

Webber, a 5-time NBA All-Star, led the NBA in rebounds per game in 1998-99 with a 13.0 rpg average. He also averaged career-high 27.1 ppg for the Kings during the 2000-01 season. Webber played a total of 831 NBA games (827 started), averaging 20.7 ppg, 9.8 rpg and 1.4 bpg in 37.1 mpg.

Since retiring in 2008, Webber has worked in broadcasting for Turner Sports. He appears as a color commentator, an occasional panelist on TNT’s Inside the NBA and a regular on NBATV. A Detroit native, Webber currently resides in Atlanta.
