Dominique Wilkins visits Barbados Parliament

dominique-wilkinsNBA Hall of Famer and Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins and his wife Sunny Wilkins were the guests of the speaker of the House, the Hon Michael Carrington and the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) candidate in St. Michael South East during the 2013 General Elections, Patrick Tannis on June 19.

Speaking to the Barbados Advocate in the conference room of the Parliament Building, Wilkins who mentioned it was his first visit to the island and jokingly said he is not ready to leave yet, said that he had a great experience on the island and promised that he will definitely be back every year.

Speaking about his visit to the House of Assembly, Wilkins said that it was very educational and he has learnt a lot of things which he did not know, as well as being intrigued by some things as well.

Wilkins who earned the nickname the ‘Human Highlight film’ for his ability to impress the crowd when he graced the floor of the basketball court with his spectacular performance, has been retired from the competitive aspect of the game for almost 13 years.

However, this does not mean he has slowed down as he is the Vice-President of the Atlanta Hawks, a television analyst for Fox and an ambassador for a pharmaceutical company on Diabetes.

Despite not winning a championship ring in his NBA career, he said “that is the only thing that eludes a lot of great players, that make their career totally complete. I don’t look at it that way, most of the times I look at it as when you played a sport that you love, for as long as I have played, 15 years and you have had a successful career, that is your ring even though you don’t have an actual ring, that is your ring. Because there is only one in a million who get a chance to do what we do.”

“I have had my championship, it doesn’t have to be the way someone else won it, but it is the way I won it.”

The highlight of his career is “playing against the greatest players of all time in one era”.

Yet, he admitted that “it was great at times and frustrating at times, but you measured your talent and skill with the best that ever played and then when you are considered one of the greats you have accomplished your goal”.

Tannis mentioned that Wilkins will be working closely with the government of Barbados over the next 12 months with the goal of having Wilkins host a major fund-raising golf tournament which will seek to have a lot of legendary basketball players in the island to play golf and have a week of fun.

Dominique Wilkins played 15 years in the NBA, earned his spot on the All-Star team 9 times. He holds career averages of 24.8 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 35.5 mpg in 1074 (started 995) NBA games.

He scored 26,668 points in his career, playing for Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and Orlando Magic.

Currenty, Wilkins is the vice president of basketball operations with the Atlanta Hawks and is a member of the NBA Hall of Fame.
