Ex-NBA forward Luke Walton hired as L.A. D-Fenders assistant

luke-waltonThe Los Angeles D-Fenders have hired Luke Walton as a player development coach for the NBA D-League team, NBA official website reported.

Walton played 11 years in the NBA with LA Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers, including 50 games with the Cavaliers last season.

He helped the Lakers win back-to-back NBA titles in 2009 and 2010.

Walton averaged career high 11.4 ppg and 5.0 rpg for LA Lakers in 2006-07 season. Career wise, Walton played a total of 564 NBA games (138 started), averaging 4.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

In July, Cleveland renounced the rights to Walton, but general manager Chris Grant said the door remained open for him to return.

Walton was an assistant coach for the University of Memphis during the 2011 NBA lockout.
