Ex-NBA shotblocker dead at age 59


joe-meriweatherFormer NBA center Joe C. Meriweather has died in Columbus, Georgia, aged 59, NBA official website reported.

The 6-foot-10 (2.08-meter) Meriweather was the 11th pick in the 1975 NBA draft out of Southern Illinois University and is in its hall of fame.

Meriweather played 10 seasons in the NBA, averaging 8.1 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 1.2 bpg in 22.1 mpg. He averaged career high 11.1 ppg and 8.1 rpg in 1976-1977.

The 10-year NBA veteran played for the Houston Rockets, the Atlanta Hawks, the New Orleans Jazz, the New York Knicks and the Kansas City Kings. He also had played in Italy and Spain.

After his playing days were over, Meriweather coached women’s basketball at Park University in Missouri.

Park athletic department spokesman Steve Wilson says Meriweather, of Phenix City, Alabama, died unexpectedly Sunday, and cause of death was unknown.

Wilson also said Meriweather is the most successful women’s basketball coach in Park University history.
