Former Lakers champion arrested for public drunkenness

didier_ilunga-mbengaFormer NBA player Didier “DJ” Mbenga was arrested in Dallas on Tuesday morning for public drunkenness, reports WFAA-TV.

Mbenga, who has Belgian-Congolese nationality and played for Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Hornets, also pushed a police officer in the chest while leaving a restaurant, according to police.

Police say Mbenga was trying to leave Buzzbrews Kitchen at 4.00 as two police officers were walking in, and told them to move out of his way.

Mbenga was escorted out of the restaurant but continued to argue with the officers.

The police report says he was handcuffed and failed three of six field sobriety tests, and was taken to jail for public intoxication.

A witness told police he saw Mbenga act aggressively toward both the staff and a woman who he arrived with at the restaurant.

Mbenga bounced around the league for 7 seasons, averaging career high 2.7 ppg for the LA Lakers in the 2008-09 NBA season.

The athletic 7-foot center averaged 1.8 ppg and 1.5 rpg in just 6.7 minutes of playing time. He appeared in 234 career NBA games, starting in 4 of them. It should be noted that Mbenga has won two NBA championships with the LA Lakers, in 2009 and 2010.
