Gilbert Arenas might be headed to Chinese Basketball Association

Former NBA player Gilbert Arenas may be heading to the Far East to join the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), according to Yahoo! Sports.

Sources close to Arenas are saying the ex-NBA star is close to signing a one-year deal with the Guangdong Southern Tigers of the CBA.

The 30-year old Arenas worked out for several NBA teams this offseason, but couldn’t garner enough interest for a contract.

Along with Tracy McGrady, Arenas is becoming part of a trend of NBA players moving to China in recent years, which includes Stephon Marbury, who has already won a CBA Championship and Yi Jainlian, who spent last season with Dallas, but who would be Arenas’ new teammate on the Tigers, if Arenas signs with the team.

Arenas has 11 years of NBA experience, that, if he signs with the CBA, will sure help his new team. ESPN reported that Arenas began assessing the option of playing in China almost a month ago once he realized he would most likely not be part of a NBA team. One factor he took into consideration was that the short Chinese season, which ends in March, could allow for a return to the NBA if he impresses in the Far East.

Arenas entered the NBA in 2001, and played his first two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, averaging 10.9 ppg in his rookie year, and an impressive 18.3 ppg the next year. In 2003-2004 Arenas was traded to the Washington Wizards, where he played the next 7 NBA seasons, becoming a much better scorer.

2004-2005: 80 games played, 80 games started – 25.5 ppg
2005-2006: 80 games played, 80 games started – 29.3 ppg
2006-2007: 74 games played, 73 games started – 28.4 ppg

After the 2006-2007 season, Arenas’ stats started to decline thanks to injuries, and in 2010 he was traded to the Orlando Magic, where he played in just 49 games, averaging just 8 ppg for the team.

The next year the three-time NBA All-Star Arenas signed with Memphis Grizzlies, playing in 17 games, averaging 4.2 ppg, with 40 percent shooting from the field.

Arenas will hope to relaunch his career, much like Marbury, who scored 41 points for the Beijing Ducks in the championship-clinching fifth game of the CBA finals last season.
