Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA legend Magic Johnson has has been named vice chair of the group trying to help Los Angeles get the 2024 Olympics bid, AP reported.
Los Angeles is competing against proposals from Paris, Rome, Hamburg, Germany, and Budapest, Hungary. The International Olympic Committee will select the 2024 host in 2017.
Johnson himself was on the 1992 USA Olympics Dream team that won the gold in Barcelona. A 5-time NBA champion said in a statement that Los Angeles is “the best sports town in America.”
The Los Angeles 2024 committee also said Wednesday that prominent labor leader Maria Elena Durazo would join Johnson as a vice chair of the board.
Magic Johnson led the league in regular-season assists four times, and is the NBA’s all-time leader in average assists per game, at 11.2. He played in 906 NBA games, holding career averages of 19.5 ppg, 11.2 apg and 7.2 rpg in 36.7 minutes per game.
