Sacramento Kings VP Vlade Divac says team aims playoffs next year

vlade-divac-kings-vpThe Vice President of the Sacramento Kings, former NBA star Vlade Divac isn’t wasting any time, as the team prepares to get through the NBA Draft and possibly sign new free agents.

This will be Divac’s first NBA draft, and he has many options to consider.

Divac believes the team needs  another playmaker and an upgrade at the power forward position, preferably with a long, athletic shot blocker and rim protector to complement DeMarcus Cousins, Sacramento Bee reported.

“We are receiving a ton of calls about trades, but I am very protective about the (draft) pick,” Divac said. “I don’t want to give it up unless we can get several good pieces.”

Divac further said he’d want to do something else, not just wait until the draft day.

“”We have a lot of changes to make. The league is much more up-tempo now, and we need more three-point shooting. If we don’t get that in the draft, we’ll be active in free agency and see about making trades later in the offseason,” he said.

Divac also said there possibly will be changes to the staff of the team.

“We have to upgrade our personnel staff and add people in the future, no question,” Divac said. “But I’m comfortable with our scouting and preparation.”

Divac also noted that the Kings will not be trading DeMarcus Cousins, saying “that is not happening.”

I really believe we are going to be a totally different team next season, with different energy. Our goal next year is not only to have a winning season, but a playoff season,” Divac said.

Divac played 16 seasons in the NBA for LA Lakers, Charlotte Hornets, and Sacramento Kings. He averaged career high 16 ppg backed up by 10.4 rpg and 2.2 bpg for the Lakers during the 1994-95 season.

He has made a name for himself in the NBA as a sharpshooting center, both capable of blocking shots in the paint, and knocking down an outside jumper. Divac made it to the NBA All-Star team during the 2000-2001 NBA season.

He appeared in total of 1134 NBA games (979 started), averaging 11.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 1.4 bpg.

Aside from being noticed for his basketball abilities, Divac is also known as a great humanitarian, helping children in his native country of Serbia, as well as in Africa.
