Shaquille O’Neal joins a very special group of ex-NBA players


shaq-oneal-heatShaquille O’Neal has joined a very special group of former NBA players. The Diesel already has a lot of accomplishments that make him stand out among the greatest NBA players ever.

Now, he will soon become a part of a very special group of former NBA players that have their numbers retired by several NBA teams.

O’Neal’s number will soon be retired by the Miami Heat in the 2016-2017 season. Shaq played for the Heat three years, helping them win an NBA title in 2006. Thus, O’Neal’s number will be retired by both the LA Lakers and the Miami Heat.

So, who are the other NBA players on this special list?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar – LA Lakers retired his #33 jersey in 1990, Milwaukee Bucks retired it in 1993.

Charles Barkley – Phoenix Suns retired his jersey in 2004, the Philadelphia 76ers retired his #34 in 2001.

Wilt Chamberlain – LA Lakers retired Chamberlain’s #13 in 1983, the Philadelphia 76ers retired his number in 1991 and the Golden State Warriors in 1999.

Julius Erving – The New Jersey Nets honored Erving by retiring his number, recognizing his time with the ABA (American Basketball Association). The 76ers retired his #6 in 1988.

Michael Jordan – MJ has his number retired by the Chicago Bulls, where he won 6 NBA championships. Also, the Miami Heat, where Jordan never played, retired his #23 out of respect to his accomplishments.

Bob Lanier – Lanier has his number retired by the Milwaukee Bucks (1984) and Detroit Pistons (1970).

Moses Malone – Houston Rockets retired Malone’s #24 in 1998, and Philadelphia 76 plan to retire his #2 in the 2016-2017 season.

Pete Maravich – The Utah Jazz retired his number in 1975, then the New Orleans Hornets (Pelicans) retired his number in 2002, for his contributions to the city.

Earl Monroe – Monroe had his #15 retired by the New York Knicks in 1986. In 2007, the Washington Wizards retired his #10.

Oscar Robertson – Robertson has his jersey retired by the Sacramento Kings and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Nate Thurmond – Thurmond’s #42 was retired by the Cleveland Cavaliers after the 1976-77 season, while the Golden State Warriors also retired his jersey in 1978.
