Back in 2014, EXNBA published a results from a poll conducted among the website’s readers – on whether the NBA logo should be changed, and if yes, who should be put on it.
Michael Jordan gathered 41 percent of the votes, while 33 percent said the current “logo” Jerry West should remain.
It should also be noted that 12 percent of the votes in the mentioned poll went for an option “not to have any player silhouettes featured on the logo”.
It seems like Jerry West himself agrees with EXNBA’s poll.
Since the logo was designed in 1969, the former NBA star’s famous silhouette has become a part of West’s legacy. Sports fans have even crowned him “The Logo,” in reference to his immortalized status as the emblem of the NBA.
West himself, however, believes that in the future the NBA logo should feature another legendary player – Chicago Bulls’ guard Michael Jordan.
“I hate to say it’s not a Laker, but Michael Jordan. He’s been the greatest player I’ve ever seen,” West told HuffPost.
“And I’m probably a harsh judge of talent in the sense that I admire players that are really good defensive players and really good offensive players. And I felt that at his time in the game, he was the best defensive player in the game, but more importantly he was the best offensive player. And he made his teams win,” said West.
The NBA has been constantly changing ever since it was first officially established. The changes touched basically everything: the players, the rules, the teams, the playing style. The NBA logo has been unchanged since 1969, when it was first created.
Designer Alan Siegel has not been shy to admit that a photo of basketball legend Jerry West inspired his iconic NBA logo, even if the National Basketball Association has never officially done so.Follow @exnbadotcom
