Year of the Yao: Yao Ming documentary (VIDEO)

Born in Shanghai, China, Yao Ming started playing basketball for the Shanghai Sharks as a teenager, and played on their senior team for five years in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), winning a championship in his final year.

Then he saw himself being drafted in the NBA with the 1st pic, by the Houston Rockets. This documentary follows Yao from his first steps into the NBA, how he was adjusting to the new culture, meeting new friends, teammates and ultimately doing what he did – play basketball.

Oh yeah, Charles Barkley made a bet on Yao in his first season, and lost it. As a punishment – he had to kiss a donkey’s ass – yes, it is included in the documentary, and another reason to watch this documentary.

In July 2011, Yao announced his retirement from professional basketball due to a series of foot and ankle injuries which forced him to miss 250 games in his last six seasons.

Yao played 8 years in the NBA – all for the Houston Rockets. He holds career averages of 19 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game, and 1.9 blocks per game. He appeared in 486 NBA games (476 started), and was selected to the NBA All-Star team 8 times.
